Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga

The Spokane Yoga Shala is an Ashtanga Vinyasa school. "Ashtanga" means eight limbs, which could be likened to limbs of a tree and represents the blossoming process of yoga. The method of Ashtanga Vinyasa is specific in that there is a sequence of yoga postures, a style of breathing and a way of focusing that we use to develop heat. The fun side - effects of this practice happen to be that the body becomes strong and flexible but the real moment-to-moment experience of breathing and moving in this integrated way energizes you to the deepest levels. This energy called prana - when harnessed - builds strength of heart and body and positively effects your life and all who are around you. As it is said in the Upanishads the mind becomes more intuitive and the heart sees more clearly.

"The full ashtanga system practised with devotion leads to freedom within one's heart." Sri K Pattabhi Jois

We are so grateful to Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, or "Guruji" as he is affectionately known by his students, for it was his tireless work teaching this method of yoga that we are here practicing it today.

Ashtanga Vinyasa is traditionally taught in a unique and powerful way, where you will slowly, over time, develop an intimate and personal relationship to the sequence of postures. In this way it is truly one of the few therapeutic styles of yoga; each person can, with the teacher, develop his or her ideal practice, whethor they practice once a week or six times in a week.
