Yoga 101

This is the perfect place to start if you are new to yoga or new to Ashtanga Vinyasa. This 6-week long course teaches a beginner everything they need to know about starting an Ashtanga Yoga practice including understanding and traditional practice (Mysore style) of yoga. Ashtanga is the foundation of all of the classes taught at the Shala, so taking this course will help you get the most out of any style of class you take.

Moon Days
In the formal Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition no asana (posture) practice is done on new and full moon days. Observing this restraint to practice can be helpful in not becoming too attached to practice and routine. It also provides time for the body to rest and recuperate.

Restorative Yoga
Restorative vinyasa is a gentle practice that allows the body to open up using gravity, deep breathing and props. You will learn to become more aware of habitual "holding" or contracting of muscles causing overuse and chronic fatigue or tension.

Class will begin with a little bit of breath - led movement, such as sun salutations in order to warm the body and to better allow the mind to still. Then we invite you to close your eyes, breathe and relax.
